Design Ideas for NYC Row Apartments

Posted on December 9, 2018

Row apartments are a popular form multiple dwelling in New York City. Over the years, we have seen movies and television shows featuring this kind of urban dwelling characterizing the usual NYC life. Obviously though, the thing about these row houses is that they are very small. Some are even less that 10 feet long. This is why living in NYC means having to deal with cramped up spaces. However, modern interior design has found a way on how to make row houses more functional and beautiful for a typical New Yorker. So if you are looking forward to that NYC remodel soon, here are a some awesome ideas you need to keep in mind:

  1. Let the light in – Row houses usually have windows on their front and rear ends only. This means very poor lighting inside the house. The first thing you need to work on is opening those light pockets as much as you can so you could let as much light in from both ends. Invest in larger windows and glass doors. Choose smarter materials for the floor, walls and ceiling  so they can reflect as much light throughout the house. Invest on better lighting fixtures too.
  2. Welcome modern minimalism – When talking about designs that focus on space maximization, minimalism should be the first idea that comes to the minds of many. Admit it. Your apartment has very little space, so start being realistic and make that space work by being minimal. Minimalism will give your more space and air to live and work around the house comfortably. This means choosing slicker materials over bulkier and heavier ones. This would also mean adjustable and transformable furniture that you can simply turn into a functional equipment when needed and keep smartly hidden when not in use so as to conserve space (ie. murphy beds).
  3. Invest on smarter storage solutions – Some of the biggest pieces in the house are usually your storage furniture. Working with a small space means you need to be smarter when it comes to storage, because you need to have enough of them without crowing the house too much. Choose built in storage wisely and invest on storage equipment that doubles as something else (ie. foot stools/storage boxes).

An NYC remodel is usually all about space maximization. Row houses in NYC can be very small, but this does not mean you cannot make it feel like a functional home. Sometimes, it is all about smarter interior design solutions. So keep these tips in mind and make that small NYC row house work for you.
