Installing speakers in your Bathroom

Posted on October 15, 2019

A lot of people enjoy listening to music while taking a hot bath or a shower. While you can easily use a battery-powered radio or an iPod dock with built in speakers in your bathroom, this certainly isn’t an ideal set-up in terms of quality. If music is a big part of your life and you don’t want to settle using a sound system with tiny speakers, you can consider installing ceiling mounted speakers in your upcoming bathroom remodeling project.

When setting up ceiling speakers, the first thing you have to do is check for ceiling access. Ideally, having an attic on top of your bathroom would be the best situation. You can easily gain access to your bathroom ceiling and you don’t have to worry about having sound bleed into the room above. However, as long as you have a way of conveniently gaining access to your bathroom ceiling, you can proceed with this particular bathroom remodeling project. Pick out where you would like to mount your speakers. You can choose to mount them on corners or along the wall. Make sure to avoid areas where too much humidity can be a problem. This includes shower enclosures or above the bathtub area. You should also have your contractor install an extractor fan to control excess humidity. This way, you won’t have to worry about your speaker cones rotting due to excess exposure to moisture.

Next, you will have to shop for supplies. You will need the speakers themselves, speaker cables, and a small amplifier to power the speakers. If you are working on a tight budget, you could settle for car speakers. If you can afford to splurge a little, your best bet would be to purchase speakers designed specifically for ceilings. You can use 2 or more speakers for your bathroom. 2 is the minimum required to preserve the stereo image of your music. To control your speakers, you could opt to run a cable from an iPod or MP3 player straight to the auxiliary input jack or your amplifier. If you want more options, you can get a dock with a clock and radio and connect it to your amplifier. This way you can listen to music with your player or you can tune in to the news on the built in radio.

Once you have everything you need, have your contractor install everything for you. For safety reasons, this bathroom remodeling project is best left to professionals. Make sure to put or amplifier and dock in a dry place such as a bathroom cabinet or on a dry area of your bathroom counter.
