Making a Small Bathroom Appear Larger

Posted on November 16, 2018

If you have fallen in love with a particular bathroom showroom display showcase but you think your bathroom is too small to achieve the same look, do note worry since there are ways of remedying this problem. A small bathroom might be tight on space but sometimes; it is easy to trick your eyes into thinking that a room is larger than it actually is. Here are a few guidelines on making the most out of a small bathroom.

Light

Creative use of lighting is a great way of making a room appear larger. In the case of a small bathroom, your can never have too much light. Make sure that you have enough lighting fixtures to illuminate the entire room without leaving any dark spots. This should include countertop lighting and accent lighting. Keep in mind that a dimly lit room will always look smaller than a well lit room.

Color

Playing with color is another effective means of creating the illusion of space. Use light and neutral colors to make your bathroom look larger. Avoid dark colors like dark grey or blue since this can actually make the room look smaller. In addition to this, you should also avoid strong and bold colors like red or pink. While you should use light colors for large surfaces, you are still free to use any color you like for small accents like towel rods or soap dishes.

Reflective Surfaces

Reflective surfaces like mirror give a room what designers refer to as negative space. In laymen’s terms, mirrors simply make rooms look bigger. For a small bathroom, use a large full-length mirror or a sizable vanity mirror to give the room the illusion of space.

Having a small bathroom does not mean that you should give up on recreating that bathroom showroom display you fell in love with. Sometimes, all it takes is some careful planning and a little ingenuity.
