3 Common Toilet Problems

Posted on April 13, 2019

The initial reaction of most people when they see that their toilet has a problem is to grab the phone and call the plumber. However, most people are unaware that their problem may be easily fixed. When picking out a toilet for your NYC bathroom remodeling, keep these three common toilet problems in mind should you ever find yourself needing a plumber.

Toilet handle issues

If the hand on the toilet seems too loose or if it seems stuck in place, you must open the cistern lid and make a few adjustments on the lift wires. While you are doing this, you may want to extricate the handle altogether and clean it before reattaching it.

Problems with the handle can come up if left unclean for a long time. What you could also do is, you could buy and attach a new handle altogether. If the toilet refuses to flush properly then you will have to adjust the water level in the cistern.

Toilet does not stop running

The first thing you should do is adjust the lift wires. If that does not work then you should check the float ball on the toilet for cracks. If the float ball is not floating properly then it should be replaced.

Water surrounding the surface around the toilet

First of all, check for condensation around the toilet and see if it drips onto the floor. If this is the cause then simply purchase an insulation kit for the tank.

You should also check the bolts that secure the toilet in place. If they appear to be loose, tighten them – not too hard or you risk cracks forming around the toilet. On that note, check for cracks on the cistern.

If the problem persists, turn off the water and detach the toilet. Then, replace the wax ring between the surface and the toilet. These wax rings have a certain lifespan and may need to get replaced after some years.
