Choosing Materials for your Kitchen Cabinets

Posted on October 25, 2019

When most people think of cabinets, they often think of wood. While this may have been true back in the day, manufacturers today now use a wide variety of different materials to make cabinets. If you are thinking about kitchen remodeling, you may want to consider what type of material you want to use for your cabinets.

Modern cabinets can be made using a number of different materials. In fact, manufacturers often use different materials for each part of the cabinet. This is one of the reasons why cabinets are now cheaper and more affordable. Popular materials used in cabinets today include Plywood, MDF or medium density fiberboard, and particleboard.

Plywood

This type of material is made using layers of wood veneer glued together to form a rigid board. For cabinets, make sure to use furniture grade plywood. The layered veneers are glued together in such a way that the grains of each layer are at right angles with each other. This gives it more strength and durability.

Medium Density Fiberboard

Medium density fiberboard or MDF for short is made using small particles of wood glued together to form strong boards that can be used for a wide variety of applications. While not as strong as plywood, MDF is more affordable making it an attractive option for many homeowners thinking about kitchen remodeling.

Particleboard

Among the three options discussed, particleboard is the cheapest material available. This is made using resin and wooden shavings, which are then compressed to give the material rigidity and strength. To give it a more natural look, particleboard cabinets are often finished with wooden veneers.

These three materials have varying characteristics that may make them ideal for specific types of kitchen remodeling projects. Choose the option that suits both your needs as well as your budget.
