Guide to Kitchen Garbage Disposals

Posted on April 4, 2019

When choosing a new garbage disposal for your NYC kitchen remodeling, there are a few things you will need to consider to get the most out of this appliance. Not every garbage disposal is the same and it would be in your best interests to consider all your options.

The most important aspect of any garbage disposal unit is the horsepower. The horsepower is what commonly dictates the size and price of the disposal unit. The other things you should always ask about is how noisy the unit is; the components that come with it, and what its limits are.

1/3 Horse power

Most garbage disposals do not go lower than this. At a glance, you may think of this as the most economical choice but it will not last as long as stronger units and can jam more easily.

1/2 horse power

Available for about $80, these provide enough power for most homes and they are small enough to fit in tight spaces. The problem with these, however, is that they tend to be noisy and require a lot of running water to function properly.

3/4 horse power

Most kitchens do not need to go higher than 3/4 horse power. It is a good size and will have more than enough power to handle most things you feed it. A garbage disposal this strong will not jam easily and will have good sound proofing as well.

1 horse power

A garbage disposal unit with 1 horse power is strong enough to handle chicken and fish bones with ease. There are even units that come with better sound proofing than models with 3/4 horse power. Take note that some of these units are large enough to take all the space underneath your sink.

To make your garbage disposal unit last, be sure to get units with full stainless steel components. Units with large grinding chambers are also less likely to clog.
