Kitchen Countertops of Recycled Glass

Posted on June 22, 2019

When most people think about glass, they normally associate it with the word ‘fragile’ or ‘delicate’. Be that as it may, countertops made out of recycled glass are actually very durable and would fit in with all kinds of kitchen remodeling plans.

Not only are these tiles lovely to look at, they are also considered as green alternatives. Recycled glass is needed to make tiles and slabs of Venetian terrazzo.

Terrazzo can be comprised of recycled materials, natural materials, or a mix of both. Because of their manufacturing process and the different materials it can be made with, Terrazzo can have varying levels of eco-friendliness and VOC content. There are also some variants of Terrazzo counters that will require resealing every few months, an important fact if you are making kitchen remodeling plans; make sure you ask about the VOC levels and materials used when buying terrazzo slabs.

Terrazzo also comes in tile form and this is usually comprised of old glass bottles. There are even some terrazzo tiles that are composed of 100% recycled materials.

Terrazzo tiles are great for kitchen design as they are available in various colors, textures, and sizes.  You also have to factor in the fact that it is difficult to find terrazzo tiles that are uniform when making kitchen remodeling plans.

Probably the biggest disadvantage of terrazzo tiles is that it is prone to scratches. This means that they are more suitable for decorative purposes rather than work surfaces.
